Rose Sloan
Although art has been a life-long interest, it has only been since I retired from teaching in 2001, that I have been able to dedicate myself full time to painting. It has been a life long dream that has finally come to pass. Here is a brief history of my involvement in art.
My husband, Tim Sloan, and I joined the Peace Corps in l964 and stayed one year longer in Quito, Ecuador, in order to paint and have our first child. We had an exhibition of our work when we arrived back in Salt Lake City and with the money we earned, we moved to California. I continued to paint and attend classes at MPC as I could. However, my art work was put aside while I raised two kids. Eventually I went back to college and got my California Credential. After my children were in high school, I went to work as a teacher and taught 3rd grade for 17 years.
After I retired I was able to continue my art work. I have taken classes with the Carmel Adult School and participated in workshops taught by local artists. (Gil Dilinger, Christine Crozier, Jerry Stitt, Edward Norton Ward, and Kaffe Fasset) In the last 2 years, my husband and I began teaching classes with the Carmel Adult School. It has been said that teaching is the best way to learn how to paint. We currently teach an oil and acrylic class and a beginner and intermediate watercolor class. We attend two life drawing classes per week. One is taught by Jeanne Fosnot, the other is an open workshop. We try to paint outdoors once a week.
Although I do not have a gallery, as of now, I try to keep my outwork out in the public eye, by taking advantage of every opportunity to show. In 2007 I sold 10 or 12 paintings.
